I have to many. One small coffee mate and a large one, a gevaila, senseo (just ordered not yet got), a old cowboy one used on open fires, small italian that makes espresso on stove, and turkish...
Like you, I have several. When I am at home on a regular day, I use a drip style (no brand names) where the unit has a basket with grounds and the water is boiled and drips through the grounds contained in a basket with a paper filter into a pot below the basket. On the road (I travel frequently and camp out in parks and campgrounds) I use a unique pot, a vacuum drip style dating back to sometime in the 40's when my mom bought it. Vacuum drip pots are composed of 2 sections, the pot, and a funnel like thing which sits on top. The grounds are in the top and the water in the bottom. When the water starts to boil, the pressure forces the boiling water up into the funnel until the water level is below the bottom of the tube at the bottom of the funnel at which point steam starts coming up into the funnel. At this point, you turn off the heat and let the works cool down. As the steam in the bottom part condenses, it draws a vacuum in the pot which sucks the coffee back down from the top. There is a spring loaded retainer in the funnel which filters out the grounds as the coffee is sucked back into the pot. In practice, this is very similar to what you do with a French press, separate the coffee from the grounds mechanically. This vacuum drip pot I have is the best coffee I have ever had, especially early in the morning when I am in a campsite as the sun is coming up. The only reason why I do not use it at home is because of convenience, as it is so much easier to use the regular filter/drip maker I have in the kitchen, which also has a timer so it is ready shortly before I get up in the morning. I also have an espresso maker, like you have, but I only use it rarely as it takes so much work and it only makes one large cup at a time. I use the espresso maker on the road when I stop during the day at a rest stop since I only want a small quantity of high quality coffee instead of the large quantity my vacuum-drip maker makes. I have a hand mill and I grind beans to be the right grind for the maker I use at any given time. The exception is I use regular commercial ground coffee when I am at home, like Folgers or Yuban. My only problem, getting the gaskets which seal the funnel to the pot in my vacuum drip maker. It is about 65 years old (My mother bought it in the 40's, or so she said, and gave it to me about 30 years ago since I was the only one of her 7 kids who appreciated it and used it every time I came home on leave from the Navy, a few times a year.), older than I am. Without a tight gasket seal between the pot and funnel, the vacuum drip pot fails miserably... Plain ordinary rubber cement works as a temporary fix to seal a crack in the gasket I learned this the hard way and believe me when I say that gaskets are few and far between and I have bought as many as I can every time when I found them... And it is getting harder to find gaskets as time goes on...
