How much of the Aid which Da West/Oxfam etc pumps into Africa and Asia just gets taken by a corrupt elite?
I wish to know how much of the money which western governments pump into 'Developing Countries' just gets absorbed by a corrupt elite of wealthy businessmen and corrupt government officials. Also, how much of the money which people donate to Oxfam, Christian aid, Bob Geldof etc actually reaches the pot-bellied kids we watch on tv - and what happens to it en route if the cash doesn't all make it?
Oxfam and other charities work differently to governments - they take a bottom-up approach, so the money goes straight to grass roots projects, and goes nowhere near the hands of corrupt politicians or local administrators.
The money given by governments is different. It is more top-down, and is often in the form of loans, or tied aid (so basically they say we'll give you 10 million dollars, on the condition that you sign this arms deal with a British company, or you use it to build a dam over this village because we think it will be beneficial (even though most often it is not)). A lot of that will go to corrupt officials, but you do, to an extent, have to accept that is how things work in some countries. If you want to get something done, you need to put money in the right hands - it's not just governments, companies trying to secure contracts in Africa and the Middle East do the same - you have to include a bribe for everyone from the secretary upwards just to get your bid considered! If some of the money was not skimmed off the top by politicians, nothing would ever get done, unless you want us to do an Iraq and march into these countries to force a total regime and social change?
