For frothing milk: frother v. french press?
I'm interesting in adding some frothed milk to my occasional espresso. I was looking into a hand-held frother. But in a few reviews I read that a french press might do the trick as well. I could also kill two birds with one stone with a french press because I brew coffee in it and froth milk. But I don't know which gadget to get, any suggestions on one of the two? If so, do you have any particular frother or french press that you think works well? I'm looking for in the range of $20.
I've used an Aerolatte frother for years and really love it. It's about $20 at places like Bed, Bath and Beyond (though you could get cheaper with one of their 20% off coupons), and it may be cheaper in other places.
I think the Aerolatte is considered the best "inexpensive" separate frother.
A few tips about frothing milk:
...use either cold milk or hot milk (they froth for different reasons, and milk at in-between temps won't work as well)
...the batteries will give a few days of spectacularly-thick-tall froth, then settle down to very good froth for quite a long time (when the froth really isn't thick enough, change the batteries)
...not sure how well the Aerolatte will froth large amounts of milk (especially when the batteries are run down), but then I don't need more than an inch or so on my coffee
...I make my froth in the cup I want to drink from then pour the coffee (dripped into another cup) into the froth, but the froth can be poured on top of the coffee instead (I like the froth cool to contrast a bit with the hot coffee, but it gets warmed a bit when pouring the coffee into it)
