What tricks do you have to save $ at the grocery store? I'll share mine if you'll share yours.?
Cinnamin sticks are costly like most spices. But recently I have discovered that they are much cheaper in the spanish section of the store. The "bark" is a little different- softer, but they work fine for my purposes. I make my own flavored coffee in my drip brewer at home by adding a few peices of cinamin stick and some orange peel (I keep some every time I eat an orange and keep it in the freezer.) Voila! tastes wonderful and I save even more not having to buy the fancy coffees. Have you found any ways to save money while still eating good? Please share.
Buy in bulk where practical.
Plan menus. They don't have to be cast in bronze. If chicken is on sale, I'll bake a chicken and save meatloaf for another time.
Look for "free" meals. Okay they aren't really free. But if you bake a chicken and don't use it all. You may have enough left over for chicken salad or soup. Snack on something else.
Use a list at the grocery store. It will save you a bundle in impulse buys.
Cook. Convenience foods are expensive. I make my own chocolate syrup for cocoa. I make my own salad dressings, puddings, yogurt, biscuit mix, pie crust, pizza crust, cookie mix.
If I need lemon juice, I zest the lemon first and freeze the zest, and then squeeze the juice. Same for oranges, limes and grapefruit.
I make a pot of tea, not just a cup. Saves tea bags. Tea can go in the fridge for a couple of days and I've got tea ready for iced or hot tea (nuke it).
I use coupons when they make sense. I don't buy something just because I've got a coupon for it.
Buy generic when it's practical. Some generic brands are good. Some are lower quality.
