Why have fully-automatic shotguns not been mass produced; would they not be good for military use?
I've seen a couple of videos of rare and 'prototype' fully automatic shotguns. I was wondering, why have these never 'taken off' in either military or riot-control situations?
I understand that their range is somewhat limited and that you can never guarantee that there isn't going to be collateral, but surely they'd be the perfect weapon for clearing confined spaces such as foxholes or bunkers, or ideal for riot control if loaded with some sort of non-lethal shot?

Many people must have considered this concept, but I'm guessing that since they would only be useful for a limited number of things, whearas an assault rifle can be used for medium if not long range as well as being effective in a raid. Also, the clips would have to be huge, as shotgun shells are big as it is. In this case, the pros are outweighed by the cons.
