When I'm brewing espresso on my Mr. Coffee ECM160, why does air come out?
The equipment I use:

I grind my beans for 4 cups on the finest setting for espresso. I fill my filter to the brim and tamper it down will all my might and I twist the tamper a bit. At first, it looks like it brews as normal (slow stream of espresso). Then when it gets past the 2 cup line, the espresso sprays out with air. Im thinking at this point, the brew is weak. I filled the water tank to the brim, which didn't solve the problem. So what is the problem? Do the grinds have to be finer? Is this normal for a low quality espresso machine? Thank you.
Wow! The conical burrs cost $100! I need a cheap solution. I might try this item with the business card mod thats found in the comments.

Or just buy already ground espresso coffee.
Your grinder is the wrong type for espresso as it cannot grind fine enough. It is fine for drip however, also for spices ( not both unless you like your coffee tasting of pepper). You need a burr grinder. To make sure this is indeed your problem, buy a small amount of fresh roasted coffee from a coffee shop (not a supermarket) and have it ground by them for espresso machine (they will know what setting)
