What are cappucino's latte's mocachino's & flavouring?
Sometimes things evolve over time so slowly that it doesn't seem like there's anything new tremendously but just a tad to things. Take computers. I got into computers when Windows 3.11 was around so I understand a shortcut is an icon to a dos file. I have no problem with Apple computers because I watched Steve Jobs perform on stage for the last 5 years so Apple's are really easy to use.
However, I am not a coffee drinker? Don't really like it. But am curious about it and the culture of coffee. For there are so many it's like choosing fine wine.
So what kind of coffee do you drink for thirst and alertness and what kind of coffee goes with dessert or as dessert? What is a cappucino, latte, mocachino, espresso, and why irish cream and vanilla and other flavouring?
Can you get flavouring for all drinks - like hot chocoalte?
I'm really lost!!!
Ok, it's an epic menu these days, but here are a few basics...
Most 'proper' coffees will be based on a shot of espresso. Espresso is a strong small amount of coffee about the size of an alcohol shot you'd get in a bar. The water is passed through the coffee grounds under pressure and this makes espresso a concentrated form. Obviously you can get filter coffee which is a more dilute version, but it's often of a lesser quality.
A latte is one or two shots of espresso mixed with plenty of hot milk, making it a milky, mild coffee drink. You can add various syrups to add flavouring and sweetness, such as hazelnut, caramel etc. It's just a matter of personal taste.
You can drink espresso neat if you like, or with added hot water, this is an Americano.
A cappuccino is again one or two shots of espresso with a layer of milk foam on top, often sprinkled with chocolate powder for decoration. When you heat milk using a steamer it froths and this froth is what you get on a cappuccino. It's a stronger coffee, with less milk and is served in a normal sized cup like you have at home.
A Machiatto is espresso in a small cup with a very small amount of milk foam on top.
A ristretto is essentially a weaker form of espresso, with less coffee to water ratio, but the same small size shot as an espresso
A mocha or mochachino is similar to a latte or cappucino, only it has chocolate powder added to give it a chocolatey undertone, again you can add extra syrup to sweeten and add flavour.
As for what coffee goes with which occassion, it's usually assumed that espresso is the one to go for when you need a quick energy boost as it's coffee in its most concentrated form. Latte's and cappucinos are easy to drink and the option most people go for and syrup you add is entirely dependent on you.
